about

Among his many creative talents, Wes Phillips was a phenomenal bassist and superb improviser. I had the privilege of playing with him a handful of times in the mid-aughts.
This is one of two recordings we made together at Bickett Gallery in 2004. He plays double and electric bass. Witness for yourself.

Jason and I had practiced together a couple of kind of tricky parts for this show and Wes and Phil, who had played together a lot, jumped right on that shit with very little prep. Sure, it's messy.
And there's a really nice improvised moment on "Mellow Jihad" where those fellers sing together.

Recorded at Bickett Gallery, Raleigh, by Dave Zahn, 2004
